MOre Than Words October Challenge - Costume

Our Main Challenge is based on a word inspiration and a creative challenge.

Word Inspiration - COSTUME
Creative Challenge - BLACK BACKGROUND

What does the word COSTUME inspire you to create?
You can choose to use the actual word somewhere on your project
or simply be inspired by it. Please explain in your blog post
how it inspired you if it isn't obvious in your work.

We want to see your dark and mysterious side by using
a BLACK BACKGROUND on your project. Whether your costume
is a Halloween outfit, a wedding dress or a work uniform,
the theme is up to you, but your background must be black!

I love the thoughts evoked by the word COSTUME... the drama, colours, textures and layers which is what I tried to create on my page. I wanted to dress up my simple BLACK BACKGROUND like I would dress up in a costume.  I used a black and white photo of a child playing on the beach which I found complemented the dramatic concept of my creation.

I painted the background with clear gesso and stencilled a random black graphite texture paste pattern. Once dry, I stencilled a black gesso pattern over the top of some of the graphite and dried. I  sprinkled sapphire blue and charcoal grey embossing power over the main area to add a very light touch of colour that gave the page a bit of depth. Once dry, randomly spread clear glue over the stencilled area to add ragged drips and layers and sprinkled a wonder aqua and gold embossing powder and dried. Tip: this will take awhile to dry with a heat gun so be patient but it will be worth it.

I added all of my wonder Dusty Attic Chipboard to the page which I had painted in a variety of aquas, golds, steampunk copper and teals. to add a grungy look to your chipboard. Make sure you add a fine line of white gesso to the edges to that it gives it texture and depth.

I added sisal sprayed with a golden colour and added my photos. The words were painted in black and edged with white gesso to make them stand out.

Finally, add mini purls in white in and around the layout making sure that you add drips, along the edges of the chipboard and underneath the photos. it need sot be very random and adds a ragged grungy look.

I hope you enjoy and would love to see your thoughts in the comments bar below.

September Dusty Attic - Amelia and her dog Bella

What a beautiful moodboard with the lovely deep maroon. I have focused on the maroon/burgundy and soft grey of the moodboard and featured a lovely photo of my granddaughter giving her dog Bella a cuddle. I loved the way that seh was giving Bella a big hug.

I laid strips of provo craft tissue paper on the page to create darker layers and features on the patterned paper. once dry, I painted burgundy watered down paint to add colour to the strips and sprayed with water to blend and add tones to the page. I added a light sage green to the lower right hand side to add depth of colour.
Once dry, stencilled dark walnut and gesso grids vertically on the page making sure that soem of the lines were also off the page at he top and bottom.

The chipboard pieces were painted in a variety of colours from dark maroon/burgundy, dark walnut and and green. they were layered in and around the photo mats. Once glued in place, using white gesso, painted the adges of the chipboard to add grungyness and to add depth. Weave sisal to add texture around the layers.

To finish off, add the photos and words and add drops of paint over the layer (remember to cover your photo) to add the final grungy look.

I hope you enjoy and remember to do to the Dusty Attic Blog for more inspiration.

More Than Words - Orgins

I decided to use the colours of the Australian flag combined with a good old Australian institution - the long week end.

I used Dusty Attic cogs and industrial chipboard to represent the working week combined with the industry of working.

I hope you enjoy and for more inspiration on this challenge and also the wonderful dusty attic chipboard, go to the following websites:

August - Dusty Attic

Beautiful soft tropical colours for this months mood board.

I thought that it was perfect for some of my photos when I was in Bali in 2016 with a group of scrapbookers on a Bali retreat Scrapbooking trip. And guess who was the guest designer and teacher - yes the wonderful Jen Hedgers from Dusty Attic.

I prepared the background paper with clear gesso and randomly stencilled the back ground with white modelling paste. Once dry, use a variety of Lindy Stamp Gang Magicals to add colour that represents the colours in the mood board.

I coloured the chip board with a variety of Tim Holtz Distress Oxides and LSG Magicals. when dry, start layering the pieces starting with the frames. Tip - I used a rular to make sure the frames were straight.

I fussy cut pieces from the Mintay Paper range - Wanderlust which was the right colour palette for the page and concept - travel. Finish with words that I cut to size.
